A Study on the Factors Influencing Life Satisfaction of the Elderly Living Alone in Urban Areas: Focused on Gender and Employment Status

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among demographic, health, psychosocial, and economic characteristics of the elderly living alone in cities by gender and employment group. This study used data from the 13th wave (2018) of the Korea Welfare Panel Survey (KOWEPS). The subjects of this study were 1,051 urban elderly people aged 65 and older living alone. The factors that affected life satisfaction among elderly men living alone were age, health condition, depression, self-esteem and relation with one's children. The factors that affected life satisfaction in elderly women living alone were age, health conditions, depression, self-esteem and relation with one's children. In the case of senior citizens who are not employed, age, education, housing type, health condition, depression, self-respect, relation with one's children, willingness to help, total annual income, pension benefits and homeowner status were the factors that affected the elderly. In the case of senior citizens living alone in the job market, gender, health status, depression, self-respect and relation with one's children were the factors that affected them. The results of the analysis on all elderly living alone aged 65 or older are as follows. Gender, age, housing type, health condition, alcohol consumption, depression, self-esteem, relation with one's children, trust in others, willingness to help, total annual income, pension benefits, and homeowner status were factors that influence life satisfaction.
